Come See Forest, Trees, & Elk!
Seeing and hearing elk in person is an awe-inspiring experience – the high point of any visit to Pennsylvania Elk Country. With that experience in mind, we’ve designed the Elk Country Visitor Center as a place where visitors have an opportunity to see and experience these majestic animals year-round in their natural habitat.
The Visitor Center features three observation trails with viewing areas and interpretive wayside displays. All trails are wheelchair accessible and lead to viewing areas where you can see the elk in a natural setting. Visitors can also experience and learn about other native plants and animals, the area’s history, and the surrounding ecosystem.
We ask that you observe the Visitor Guidelines on trails and elsewhere. Remember to stay on the designated trails and paths at all times for your safety and the safety of the elk. No pets or smoking are permitted in the Center or on trails or viewing areas. Please use trash receptacles or take trash with you. Trails and viewing areas are for foot traffic only. All of the trails here at the Elk Country Visitor Center are gravel with informational panels, benches, and viewing walls dotted throughout. All trails are open to visitors unless marked, please stay on designated trails to respect the plants and animals that exist off the path. All trails close 15 minutes before closing or 15 minutes before dark, whichever comes first. All trails equally offer opportunity to view Elk and PA wildlife.
Vista Trail
Vista is a short trail of 120 yds, 2-minute walk. This flat trail leads to a pavilion with benches, informational boards, and a viewing wall overlooking an herbaceous opening. This often quite trail, that starts at the front door of the center, is a wonderful way to view PA elk.
Meadow Trail
Meadow is a bit longer of a trail, the main trail path from the back of the center is about 300 yds. Walking to the elevated viewing blind can be made shorter by accessing though the parking lot, about 150 yds distance. This elevated viewing blind has a handicap accessible ramp and lower cut viewing windows at chair height. There are also commonly chairs left for visitors who wish to sit as well. Between the viewing walls/blind, benches, and informational boards, meadow trail is a great choice to view PA elk.
Buckeneezer Hollow Trail
Buckeneezer is our longest trail, with the distance from the center back door down the main walkway being 360 yds. This trail has many splits that offer a range of paths out and back to the center. With benches, informational boards, and 3 viewing walls there is plenty to explore on this trail. Often our most popular trail due to the fields it overlooks, providing great opportunity to view PA Elk.
