Elk Smart is an important initiative to help remind visitors who come to visit Elk Country to preserve the wild nature of the PA elk herd. Learn the four principles of Elk Smart, how to practice them, and their importance. There will also be free Elk Smart giveaways.

As we approach the New Year with excitement, join us for an eco-friendly craft. We will take shredded paper and wildflower seeds to make recycled paper! After its use, this paper can be used to plant wildflowers in your garden!

With the help of an experienced leather crafter, participants will be making their own leather pouch that will be just the right size for marbles, Hershey’s Kisses, or, if you’re fortunate, coins! All materials will be supplied by the artisan and only basic skills such as using scissors, using a hammer and lacing through holes will be used. No cost.

Join one of our educators as we ring in the New Year by hiking the grounds of the Elk Country Visitor Center. This will provide an opportunity to enjoy parts of the property that most don’t have the opportunity to see! Hike will be approximately one to two miles and the terrain will be fairly flat. Dress for the weather.

Elk Talk? You’re telling me elk talk?…. They do! Elk actually communicate in several different ways. Join our KECA staff as we learn about the many different signals and calls that elk make or use when “talking” with one another. In no time, you’ll be able to understand exactly what an elk is saying just by watching them in the field.

There’s plenty to learn here at the Elk Country Visitor Center. Come test your knowledge with our scavenger hunt! All answers can be found at the Elk Country Visitor Center, either within the center itself or on the trails. Come explore and receive a prize for answering all the questions.

Have you ever wondered where Elk came from? Or wondered how Pennsylvania got their elk? If you answered yes to either one of those questions, then you should come to the Elk Country Visitor Center. We will take a deep dive into the history of elk from where they started and how they are doing today! You are sure to learn something new about Pennsylvania’s Elk Herd.

Over the past few years we have seen a drastic decline in our bat population. Specifically, the little brown bat, which is affected by a dangerous fungus. Come join a staff member as we talk about white nose syndrome.

New to learning about elk? Join us for the basic breakdown as we learn about elk history, elk ecology and elk behavior. Are you a seasoned “Elkspert?” We bet you’ll learn something new too!

Antler scoring helps describe the size of a buck or bull and is a useful insight into the biology of those animals. Are you interested in how antlers are scored? Join our conservation education staff to learn the basics of scoring white-tailed deer and elk antlers. We will provide all necessary equipment including the antlers.

Do you ever wonder what happens to sick, injured or orphaned wild animals? If so, join us to learn about wildlife rehabilitation, and what to do if you find a wild animal in need of help!
